Picture a Thursday evening after a long commute, with a back that feels cold and stiff right between the shoulder blades. You don't want someone digging an elbow into it. You want it warmed through. That's the person who usually asks us about stone massage at Sea Med Spa in Kharghar, and the next question is always the same: what's the difference between salt stones and the hot stones I've seen elsewhere?

Hot Stone Massage: The Version You Probably Know

A classic hot stone massage uses smooth, flat stones, usually basalt, heated in water. The therapist sets some along your back, holds others in their hands, and glides them over oiled skin. The stone's job is to carry heat deep into the muscle so that the therapist doesn't have to press as hard to get you to relax.

That's the appeal. Heat does the work, and the pressure stays gentle. If you've had a hot stone session somewhere and enjoyed it, the idea behind a salt stone massage will feel familiar. Only the stone changes.

What a Himalayan Salt Stone Massage Changes

At our Sector 11 branch, the stones are hand-carved from Himalayan pink salt instead of basalt. Two things follow from that, and you'll notice both on the table.

The first is heat. Salt holds and releases warmth differently from basalt, so the therapist warms the stones before the session and then lets them rest in one spot for a moment before moving on. The warmth feels slower and more settled than a stone straight from a hot-water bath.

The second is texture. A basalt stone is fully smooth. Salt carries a faint mineral grain, so the passes feel just slightly less slippery against the skin. You won't mistake it for a scrub, and we wouldn't call it one, but many people say their skin feels a little smoother afterwards. The full details of the therapy are on our Himalayan salt stone massage page.

Salt Stone vs Hot Stone Massage Side by Side

Stone: basalt for a classic hot stone massage, Himalayan pink salt for ours. Surface: smooth and glassy on basalt, lightly textured on salt. Pressure: gentle to medium in both, because the heat and the weight of the stone do most of the work. Pace: slow in both. With salt, the therapist tends to pause and let the warmth sit before moving on. Session: ours runs 75 minutes on the table, with oil.

Neither one is the better massage in general. They suit different moods. If you like the idea of a slow, warm hour with a little texture in it, the salt stones are worth trying. If you've already had classic hot stones and loved them, you'll still enjoy the salt version, but you'll feel it as a variation, not a revelation.

What a Session Feels Like at Sea Med Spa, Sector 11

You lie on the table with oil on your skin, and the therapist works over your back, shoulders and legs in long, gliding passes with the warm stones. Between passes they stop and let the heat settle in one area. It's a quiet session. Most people stop talking after the first ten minutes.

The stones should feel warm, never hot. If they're too much, say so and the therapist will cool them or switch to lighter passes. The same goes for pressure. It's your hour, and you can change anything about it at any point.

Preparing for a Stone Massage in Kharghar

There's very little to prepare. Arrive a few minutes early so you're not rushing straight from the road, and avoid a heavy meal in the hour before. Lying face down on a full stomach is uncomfortable, and with warm stones on your back you'll want to be settled.

Wear whatever is easy to change out of. Oil is part of the session, so leave anything you'd hate to mark at home, and take jewellery off before you lie down, since the therapist works over your back, shoulders and legs. Mention anything that matters at the start: a sore shoulder, a spot you'd like left alone, or how warm you like things. Therapists at Sea Med Spa would much rather adjust in the first five minutes than have you quietly put up with something.

Afterwards, give yourself a little time. The warmth and the oil leave most people a bit slow and sleepy, so we'd suggest not booking a meeting straight after. Drink some water, and expect your skin to feel soft from the oil. If you've got a long drive home across Navi Mumbai, an evening slot works better than a lunchtime one for exactly this reason.

Who Should Choose Something Else

A stone massage is a warmth-first treatment, so it's the wrong choice if what you want is firm pressure on one stubborn knot. For that, deep tissue is a better fit. If you want pressure that's firm but rounder and more even, our warm bamboo massage uses heated bamboo canes and is also at Sector 11.

Tell us before you book if you are pregnant, are sensitive to heat, have a circulation condition or a recent injury, or are managing any medical condition, so we can adjust the session or suggest something else. Mayo Clinic's overview of massage therapy also advises checking with your doctor first in cases like these. A massage is a wellness service, not medical treatment.

Common questions

What is the difference between salt stone and hot stone massage?

A classic hot stone massage uses smooth basalt stones. A Himalayan salt stone massage uses stones carved from pink salt, which hold heat differently and have a faint mineral texture against the skin.

Does a Himalayan salt stone massage exfoliate the skin?

Gently, as a side effect of the glide. It isn't a dedicated scrub, but the stones' texture can leave skin feeling smoother than a standard massage would.

Is a salt stone massage firm or gentle?

Gentle to medium. The warmth and the weight of the stones do most of the work, so the pace stays slow. If you want firm pressure on one spot, deep tissue is the better choice.

How long does a Himalayan salt stone massage take?

75 minutes, oil-based, on the table.
